What is an ion?
An ion is any atom that has a positive or negative charge.
Why do we need negative ions?
A positive ion needs a negative ion to unite with to be useful. In this united state it can perform many important tasks such as accelerating the delivery of oxygen to our cells and tissues. Every move we make burns up energy and leaves behind positively charged molecules seeking negative ions to become useful again. Unfortunately, in our polluted environment it is becoming more difficult to access the quantities of negative ions we require to satisfy our bodies needs. Theory of negativity
Research as far back as 1932 labelled negative ions as the “vitamins of the air”, and thought capable of reducing stress, lifting depression, relieving hay fever or soothing migraines, by balancing serotonin levels in the body and halting the growth of bacteria. Places with high levels of negative ions include mountains, forests, beaches, waterfalls -places where we migrate to for leisure. Low levels of negative ions and high levels of positive ions are found in the polluted air of the city, in air conditioned rooms, near computers and in cars. Medical research and university studies throughout the world verify that an abundant supply of negative ions has a positive effect on our health and well-being, whereas inhaling too many positive ions can trigger various harmful responses such as the release of excess Serotonin and Histamine. Too much Serotonin in your body may cause diverse effects such as: migraine headaches, allergic reactions, irritability, insomnia, hot flushes, tension, swelling, depression; rhinitis, sore throat, bronchial cough, nausea and intestinal spasms. The presence of too much Histamine may cause headaches, allergies, hay fever, nausea and insomnia.
Ions and our mood
Most authorities agree that ions act on our capacity to absorb and utilise oxygen. Negative ions in the blood stream accelerate the delivery of oxygen to our cells and tissues, frequently giving us the same euphoric jolt that we get from a few whiffs of straight oxygen. Positive ions slow down the delivery of oxygen, producing symptoms markedly like those in anoxia, or oxygen starvation.
